CDM Project at Lowestoft Shopping Centre
11th June 2012
Following 6 weeks of measured work Glazing Refurbishment have completed their CDM project at Lowestoft’s Premier Shopping Centre.Having carefully costing the works within a tender process Glazing Refurb were instructed by our client to carry out the full refurbishment of a 100m long polycarbonate canopy that had seen little maintenance since installation in 1990. Our scope of works encompassed the removal and replacement of nearly 100 polycarbonate panels installing new UV clear poly. Numerous curved and shaped sheets were re-installed, measured weeks in advance to ensure our works program continued seamlessly.
Alongside our poly replacement program or works included the thorough preparation and redecoration of all associated cover capping, flashings, glazing bars and horizontal rails to both the external and internal surfaces. Using a specified primer and 2 coat gloss finish our redecoration team worked concurrently with the high level fitting teams to ensure all works were systematically phased and minimum disruption was caused to our clients busy pedestrian thoroughfare.
To complete the works we were tasked with supplying and installing a bespoke aluminium head flashing detail to the full length of the canopy/brickwork abutment. Specially fabricated and painted at our factory facility the flashing sections were pre-cut to ensure our onsite team could fit all materials in a methodical manner.
Works of this size and scope take considerable organisation, labour requirement and access that equipment. All high level works were conducted utilising a range of mechanical scissor lifts, cherry pickers and aluminium access towers – pre planned in their working location and used in conjunction with one another to allow simple and safe movement of all materials and site operatives.
When carrying our CDM works in public areas it’s important to look after all of your site staff, protect your materials and most importantly provide a safe working environment where both client, staff and general public are at no risk of injury. To ensure all of the above full welfare facilities were supplied offering our busy site staff a rest area with drinking water, shower and toilet facilities. All equipment used onsite was safely housed when not in use within a cordoned storage area, carefully managed by our banksman to ensure safe transit to and from works area.
With the works drawing to a close and specialist testing of the structures carried out, additional problems were identified swiftly. The associated guttering was found to be in poor condition, rusted in many places causing leaks ingress along its entire length. Proposals were put in place and a photographic schedule of conditions supplied to our client who acted quickly in instruction to allow extra works to run on from our main program. After preliminary measurement and procurement of a new bespoke gutter lining to include spigot downpipes and jointing our gutter team are set to commence repair at the end of the week.
Large scale works of this type are what Glazing Refurb does best. Dedicated Contracts Managers, site managers and fitting teams trained to the highest industry standards give our clients an unmatched service within our sector and the confidence to place their buildings glazing within our capable hands.
