Warm Edge Glazing
28th September 2012
What exactly is warm edge?Warm Edge Technology refers to the use of a unique warm edge spacer tube in double glazed units. This gives internal edge temperatures up to 65% higher than those of standard double-glazed units.
Historically, the options available to form the edge spacer bar was limited to metallic materials, however the idea of replacing metallic spacers in order to improve the thermal performance of insulating glass was first introduced in 1970.
At the time, the concept was too innovative and offered several disadvantages not least the inherent expense of new technology, which prevented mass uptake. In the 1980's this technology advanced again and more importantly was optimized and innovated for higher performance insulating glass in the 1990's.
Fast forward to the present, warm edge spacer technology is used extensively to improve thermal performance of windows, reduce condensation and with the appropiate manufacturing processes, permit faster and easier assembling of insulating glazed unit.
New technology
The very latest innovation in warm edge technology involves the use of thermoset polymers. This is a special type of plastic foam that becomes permanently set during the curing process, which means it retains 100% bounce-back memory when bonded to the glass.
The advantage is that the spacer will expand and contract in response to thermal movement in the glass, but will always return to its original shape. This capability means that unlike rigid spacer technology, the thermoset spacer provides a much more secure seal with the associated increase in thermal performance and longevity
